A word of caution about kayaking on Maui: Kayaking is best done with an early morning start as the Trade Winds often kick up around noon, sometimes earlier. The weather patterns and ocean conditions vary around the island as well as by seasons. There are kayak companies on Maui that will rent you kayaks or take you on a tour without regard for your safety. At present tour operators are loosely regulated, at best, by the State and County Governments. There are no certification requirements for the guides. If you are going to rent your own kayaks be sure to familiarize yourself with the weather patterns and ocean conditions in the area that you plan to paddle.
There were rescues of kayakers by the Coast Guard, Fire Dept. and Lifeguards in December 2002 and in February, March and April of 2003. The incidents are listed below.
Ahihi-Kinau Natural Marine Reserve: It is closed effective April 2004 to commercial tour operators. Be aware of any kayak tour company that offers to take you there as It is illegal.
